Frequently asked questions.
Short answers to the questions pilots ask.
What is WindXplorer?
An app for hot air balloon pilots that covers the whole flight: plan with Forecast, fly with Track, stay in touch with the ground crew through Crew and AirVoice, then share in the Logbook.
Is it free?
Yes during the beta, with no credit card. Paid plans will follow; a free plan will remain available.
Which devices does WindXplorer run on?
iPhone and iPad from the App Store, Android from Google Play, and PC or Mac in the browser at app.windxplorer.com. Your places, maps and flights are synced between your devices.
How is the FlyScore calculated?
Eight parameters are marked then weighted: surface wind (28), gusts (17), precipitation (12), Lifted Index (10), CAPE (10), visibility (10), temperature / dew point spread (8) and wind shear (5). Vetoes cap the score when a parameter becomes blocking, thermal activity included.
Does the FlyScore replace the pilot's judgement?
No. It is a decision aid. The pilot in command remains solely responsible for the decision to fly.
Which weather models are available?
AROME, ICON-D2, ICON-EU, ICON, ECMWF, GFS, UKMO, GEM, DMI and MET Nordic, among others. Data comes from Open-Meteo and Météo-France.
What is the difference between Crew and AirVoice?
Crew is for seeing: the ground crew follows the balloon live. AirVoice is for talking: voice goes over the mobile network, push-to-talk.
Do I need a network connection in flight?
Track's instruments work with GPS. Crew tracking, AirVoice and weather updates need a mobile connection.
Can I query WindXplorer from an AI assistant?
Yes. The WindXplorer MCP connector (mcp.windxplorer.com) lets a compatible assistant such as Claude request a windgram, a trajectory simulation or your flight statistics.
Which languages are supported?
English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese.
Who builds WindXplorer?
Adrien de Sade, competition pilot and 2018 French Champion. The app is designed and built in France.
